Best ways to hide supplements for kids

Ice Creams

Yes that’s right, Ice Cream!

It’s fatty,  it’s sweet, it’s cold. All perfect ways to hide the taste of supplements. The cold numbs the taste buds to help reduce the taste of the Hidden Ingredient, and the sweetness just makes it that much better. Plus how many kids won’t eat ice cream?? Not that many. Maybe none.

You can use any ice cream you have at home, but if you are using supplements you will be using them for a reason. Probably to help improve your child’s health, behaviour, sleep, digestive health and more. So if you can use a dairy free, low sugar ice cream, then you’ll help the process along that bit faster.

Mix the supplement powder (from the capsule, or a crushed tablet) into a spoonful of ice cream. Take 1 spoonful of the plain ice-cream to numb the taste buds a little, then the spoonful of the supplement mix, then another spoonful of plain ice-cream if needed.

Jellies

The simplest way is to buy a packet of jelly crystals and after making up the liquid, pour into silicon shapes or silicon ice cube trays. Into each jelly mix through the daily dose of the liquid / herbal/ powdered supplement. If the taste is too noticeable, spread the supplement over 2, 3 or 4 jellies.

You can amp up the nutritional value by making homemade jellies.

Homemade Jellies

2/3 cup liquid (juice)

1 1/2 tbsp gelatin*

1. Heat the liquid gently in a small saucepan until warm.

2. Sprinkle the gelatine over it and QUICKLY whisk to avoid lumps. Keep whisking to break down any lumps that form.

3. Take off the heat and pour into your silicon shaped mould. Remember to put your mould onto a freezer safe tray before pouring!

4. Freeze for 15-20 mins. Then turn out of mould while still frozen and store in a container in the fridge.

* Gelatin: use good quality such as GelPro (Australian) http://www.gelatinaustralia.com.au

More creative mum ideas

A few extra ideas that mums have come up with. Not always nutritious, but definitely successful. Mix the goods into:

  • Spoonful of nut butter or peanut butter. Salty and fatty to hide the taste.
  • Spoonful of jam. Not great I know but the sweetness definitely helps.
  • Spoonful of custard or yoghurt.
  • In a milkshake. (Can’t do this for zinc or iron supplements due to competition for absorption from the calcium in these foods)
  • Sprinkle on bread or toast underneath the topping. Best toppings are vegemite, nut butters, cream cheese, jam.
